Hemsedal Ice

A very warm spell throughout the UK has made winter climbing, especially on ice, a bit problematical for the last few weeks.

Here in central Norway the warmth has stripped away snow cover, but left spring like conditions with the sort of ice often found on a good year on the north face of Ben Nevis in mid to late April.

Overnight frosts, but daytime highs of 4 - 10 centigrade has made for slightly drippy conditions, but the ice is softer when it's like this, less brittle, and usually very pleasant to climb. Some highlights, in no particular order, from the last few days:

Tuvfossen, WI5, Grondalen

Top out on Vollokulla, WI4, with Steve and Peter

Vollokulla, pitch 3

Huw, on Tuvfossen

No need to go through all the tedious reasons regarding government advice. Suffice to say the sport and trad improver courses in May and June have been cancelled.
